Objective

By the end of this month-long lesson plan, the student will gain an understanding of Colonial America, the journey of the Mayflower, and the significance of the first Thanksgiving. They will learn about the Pilgrims, their way of life, and how Thanksgiving became a special holiday.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and crayons or colored pencils
  • Storybooks about the Mayflower and Thanksgiving
  • Simple recipes for traditional Thanksgiving foods (e.g., corn, pumpkin pie)
  • World map or globe
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research (optional)

Before starting the lesson, familiarize yourself with the key events of the Pilgrims' journey and the first Thanksgiving. Prepare a few storybooks that are age-appropriate to read together.

Activities

  • Story Time: Read a storybook about the Mayflower and the Pilgrims. Discuss the characters and their journey to America.
  • Pilgrim Hat Craft: Make a simple Pilgrim hat using paper. Decorate it and wear it while learning about the Pilgrims.
  • Thanksgiving Recipe Day: Choose one simple recipe to make together, like corn muffins or pumpkin pie. Discuss the ingredients and their importance to the first Thanksgiving.
  • Map Exploration: Use a world map or globe to find where the Pilgrims came from and where they settled. Draw a picture of the Mayflower and label important locations.
  • Thanksgiving Thank You Cards: Create thank you cards for the things you are grateful for, just like the Pilgrims did at the first Thanksgiving.

Talking Points

  • "Do you know what the Mayflower is? It's the ship that brought the Pilgrims to America!"
  • "The Pilgrims were looking for a new home where they could practice their own religion. Isn't that brave?"
  • "The first Thanksgiving was a big feast! They celebrated with the Native Americans who helped them."
  • "What foods do you think they ate at the first Thanksgiving? Let's think of some!"
  • "The Pilgrims had to work hard to grow food and build houses. What do you think life was like for them?"
  • "Thanksgiving is a time to say thank you for what we have. What are you thankful for?"
