Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and apply basic arithmetic concepts in a fun and engaging way.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencil
- Counting objects (e.g., buttons, blocks, or coins)
- Number flashcards (0-10)
- Summer-themed stickers or drawings
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Counting Summer Objects: Take your counting objects and place them in a pile. Count how many objects there are and write the number down. Then, use your summer-themed stickers or drawings to represent the same number.
- Addition with Number Flashcards: Shuffle the number flashcards and pick two cards at random. Add the numbers together by counting the total number of objects shown on the cards. Write down the sum and practice saying the equation out loud.
- Subtraction with Number Flashcards: Shuffle the number flashcards again and pick two cards. This time, subtract the smaller number from the larger number by removing the corresponding number of objects from your pile. Write down the difference and say the equation aloud.
- Summer Math Story: Create a summer-themed story using the numbers you have practiced. For example, "There were 5 seashells on the beach, and then 2 more seashells washed up. How many seashells are there in total?" Write down the story and solve it using objects or drawings.
