Objective

By the end of this lesson, Kaluna will learn about Japanese culture, including its landmarks, food, and animals, while expressing her creativity through art and storytelling. She will create a mini-book showcasing her favorite aspects of Japan.

Materials and Prep

  • Blank paper or a notebook
  • Colored pencils, markers, or crayons
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research (if possible)
  • Printouts or pictures of Japanese landmarks, food, and animals (optional)
  • Time to explore Japanese culture through videos or books (optional)

Before the lesson, it might be helpful to gather some pictures or information about Japan that Kaluna can look at for inspiration.

Activities

  • Japanese Landmark Art: Kaluna can choose a famous Japanese landmark, like Mount Fuji or a traditional temple, and create a drawing of it. Encourage her to use bright colors and add details like cherry blossoms or people in traditional clothing.
  • Japanese Food Exploration: Discuss different types of Japanese food, such as sushi, ramen, and mochi. Kaluna can draw her favorite dish and write a few sentences about what makes it special.
  • Animal Facts: Talk about animals that are significant in Japan, like koi fish and cranes. Kaluna can create a page in her mini-book with fun facts about these animals and draw them.
  • Storytelling Time: After creating her art, Kaluna can write a short story or description about her favorite aspect of Japan, combining her drawings and facts into a mini-book. Encourage her to share her story aloud.
