Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and describe basic shapes and their properties.
Materials and Prep
- Construction paper (various colors)
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Markers or crayons
- Chart paper or whiteboard
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Introduction to Shapes:
Start by discussing different shapes with the student. Show them examples of common shapes such as circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles. Ask them to identify each shape and talk about their properties (e.g., a circle has no corners, a square has four equal sides, etc.).
- Shape Collage:
Provide the student with construction paper and markers/crayons. Ask them to cut out various shapes from different colored construction paper. Then, have them create a collage by gluing the shapes onto a larger piece of paper. Encourage them to be creative and make patterns or designs with the shapes.
- Shape Hunt:
Take the student on a shape hunt around the house or outside. Ask them to find objects that resemble different shapes (e.g., a clock is a circle, a book is a rectangle). Have them point out and name the shapes they find.
