Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have explored various fine arts techniques, created their own artwork, and gained a deeper appreciation for artistic expression. They will also learn to articulate their thoughts about art and understand how different elements come together to create a cohesive piece.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper (any type will do: sketch, watercolor, or plain)
  • Pencils and erasers
  • Colored pencils, markers, or crayons
  • Access to a computer or smartphone for research (optional)
  • Art books or magazines for inspiration (optional)

Before the lesson, ensure the student has a comfortable workspace with good lighting. Discuss any specific interests they have in fine arts to tailor the activities to their preferences.

Activities

  • Art Exploration:

Start with a brief exploration of different fine arts styles such as Impressionism, Surrealism, and Abstract. The student can choose one style that resonates with them to focus on during the lesson.

  • Sketching Session:

Have the student create a quick sketch based on their chosen style. Encourage them to think about colors, shapes, and forms that represent that style. They can use references from the art books or online resources if available.

  • Color Experimentation:

Using colored pencils or markers, the student can experiment with color combinations and shading techniques. They can create a small piece that incorporates what they learned about their chosen art style.

  • Art Reflection:

After completing their artwork, have the student write a short reflection about their experience. What did they enjoy? What challenges did they face? How did they feel about their final piece?

Talking Points

  • "Art is a way to express yourself. What do you want to say through your artwork?"
  • "Different art styles can evoke different emotions. How does the style you chose make you feel?"
  • "Color can change the mood of a piece. What colors did you choose and why?"
  • "Sketching is a great way to practice. It’s okay if it’s not perfect; it’s about the process!"
  • "Reflection is important in art. What do you think about your artwork now that it's finished?"
  • "Art can be inspired by anything around us. What inspires you?"
  • "Every artist has their own unique style, just like you! What makes your art special?"
