Objective

By the end of this lesson, Everett will use Minecraft to explore and apply basic math concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and geometry through building and resource management in the game.

Materials and Prep

  • Minecraft (Java or Bedrock Edition)
  • A computer or device capable of running Minecraft
  • A notepad or digital document for calculations and notes
  • Basic understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and geometry concepts

Activities

  • Building a House

Everett will use blocks to create a house in Minecraft. He will calculate the area of the house's floor by multiplying the length and width of the house. This will help him understand how to apply multiplication in real-life scenarios.

  • Resource Gathering Challenge

Set a goal for Everett to collect a certain number of resources (like wood, stone, and iron). He will keep track of how many he collects and use addition and subtraction to calculate how many more he needs to reach his goal.

  • Geometry in Building

Everett will create a garden or park area using different shapes (squares, rectangles, circles). He will measure and calculate the perimeter and area of these shapes, helping him understand geometry in a fun way.

  • Math Quiz with Mobs

Everett will encounter different Minecraft mobs (like zombies or creepers) that will ask him math questions. For every correct answer, he can earn a special item or resource. This will make math practice exciting and engaging!

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that when you build a house, you're actually using multiplication? The area of your floor is just length times width!"
  • "When you're gathering resources, keeping track of how many you have is like a math puzzle! How many more do you need to collect?"
  • "In Minecraft, shapes can help us understand geometry. What shapes can you use in your garden?"
  • "Math can be fun, just like a game! What if I told you that answering math questions could help you defeat mobs?"
  • "Remember, every time you build something, you're using math skills that you can use in real life too!"
  • "Let's make sure to measure our buildings! How can we find the perimeter of our garden area?"
  • "What if we try to create a shape that has the biggest area with the least amount of blocks? That’s a fun challenge!"
  • "Math helps us solve problems. How can we use math to make our Minecraft world even better?"
  • "Every time you add or subtract in Minecraft, you're practicing math! Isn’t that cool?"
  • "Learning math can be like an adventure! What math challenges will you take on today?"
