Objective

By the end of this lesson, J will be able to recognize and read a selection of kindergarten sight words, enhancing their reading skills and confidence when approaching new texts.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Crayons or markers
  • Index cards or cut-out paper squares
  • Sticky tape or glue
  • A comfortable space for reading and activities

Before the lesson, prepare a list of sight words for J to focus on, such as "the," "and," "is," "to," and "it." Make sure the reading area is quiet and cozy to help J focus.

Activities

  • Word Treasure Hunt:

Hide the index cards with sight words around the room. J will search for them and read each word they find. This makes learning interactive and fun!

  • Crayon Drawing:

Ask J to pick a sight word and draw a picture that represents that word. For example, if they choose "the," they might draw a picture of "the sun." This helps them connect the word to its meaning.

  • Word Wall:

Create a "Word Wall" by sticking the sight words on the wall. J can decorate it with drawings or stickers. This visual aid will help reinforce their memory of the words.

  • Story Time:

Read a simple story together that includes the sight words. Encourage J to point out the sight words as they read. This will help them see the words in context.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think a sight word is? It's a special word we see a lot when we read!"
  • "Can you remember any sight words we've learned? Let's say them together!"
  • "Why do we practice sight words? They help us read faster and understand stories better!"
  • "Look at the words we find! Can you make a silly sentence using some of them?"
  • "How do you feel when you read a word you know? Isn’t it exciting to recognize it?"
