Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand how a vanilla plant grows and how it is turned into delicious vanilla ice cream. They will engage in hands-on activities that make learning fun and memorable!
Materials and Prep
- A picture of a vanilla plant
- A picture of vanilla beans
- A picture of ice cream
- Construction paper
- Crayons or markers
- A small bowl of vanilla ice cream (for tasting)
- Optional: a simple vanilla ice cream recipe (for discussion)
Before the lesson, gather all materials and prepare a small area for activities. Make sure the ice cream is ready for tasting at the end!
Activities
-
Vanilla Plant Discovery:
Show the student a picture of a vanilla plant and explain how it grows. Discuss what it needs to grow (sun, water, soil). Ask the student to draw their own picture of a vanilla plant on construction paper.
-
From Bean to Ice Cream:
Show pictures of vanilla beans and explain how they are harvested from the vanilla plant. Then, show a picture of ice cream and talk about how vanilla is used to make it. The student can then color a picture of ice cream, adding vanilla beans to it!
-
Taste Test:
Finally, let the student taste some vanilla ice cream! Discuss how it tastes and what flavors they can identify. Ask them to describe it using their own words.
Talking Points
- "Look at this picture of the vanilla plant! It grows in warm places and needs lots of sunshine."
- "Vanilla beans come from the flowers of this plant. They are picked when they are ready!"
- "Do you know how we make ice cream? We mix the vanilla beans with milk and sugar!"
- "Can you taste the vanilla in your ice cream? It makes it sweet and yummy!"
- "What do you think would happen if we didn’t have vanilla? Ice cream would taste different!"
