Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand how a vanilla plant turns into vanilla extract, where it grows, how it is picked, and the process it goes through to reach the store. The student will also learn about the vanilla bean and its uses.

Materials and Prep

  • Pictures of vanilla plants, flowers, and beans
  • Vanilla bean (if available) or a vanilla extract bottle
  • Paper and colored pencils or crayons
  • A small container of water
  • Plastic gloves (if using a vanilla bean)
  • Simple chart or diagram showing the process from plant to extract

Before the lesson, gather all materials and prepare a simple visual aid that outlines the journey of vanilla from plant to extract.

Activities

  • Vanilla Plant Exploration: Show the student pictures of vanilla plants and flowers. Discuss how they grow in warm places like Mexico and Madagascar. If you have a vanilla bean, let the student hold it and smell it!
  • Vanilla Bean Art: Have the student draw a picture of a vanilla plant and label its parts. They can color the flowers and the beans. Encourage creativity!
  • Extract Experiment: If using a vanilla bean, let the student carefully cut it open (with help) and smell the inside. Discuss how this is where the flavor comes from. Use gloves for safety if needed.
  • Process Chart Creation: Together, create a simple chart showing the steps from picking the vanilla plant to making vanilla extract. Use pictures and words to illustrate each step.

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that vanilla comes from a special plant? It grows in warm places like Mexico!"
  • "The vanilla flowers bloom, but they need to be pollinated to grow the beans. Isn’t that cool?"
  • "Once the beans are ready, they are picked by hand. It’s a careful job!"
  • "Can you guess what happens next? The beans need to be dried and cured to develop their yummy flavor!"
  • "Yes, you can eat the vanilla bean! It has a sweet flavor, and you can use it in baking!"
  • "Finally, after all that work, the vanilla extract is bottled up and sent to stores for us to use in our favorite treats!"
