Objective
By the end of this lesson, Mason will be able to understand basic math concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division through engaging activities related to YouTube, enhancing his mathematical skills while having fun!
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencil (or a digital note-taking app if preferred)
- A timer (can use a phone or a stopwatch)
- A calculator (optional, for checking answers)
- Access to a YouTube video (preferably one Mason likes)
Before the lesson, choose a fun YouTube video that Mason enjoys, as this will be incorporated into the activities to keep him engaged.
Activities
-
YouTube Views Estimation:
Watch a YouTube video and note the number of views. Ask Mason to estimate how many views the video might have after a week. Discuss how to calculate the growth rate using simple multiplication or addition.
-
Ad Revenue Calculation:
Explain how YouTube creators earn money through ads. Have Mason calculate how much money a creator might earn based on a hypothetical number of views and a set rate per thousand views. This will involve multiplication and division.
-
Video Length Challenge:
Select a video and have Mason calculate how many times he could watch it in an hour. This will involve division and reinforce the concept of time management.
-
Create a YouTube Channel Plan:
Have Mason outline a plan for a YouTube channel, including the number of videos he wants to upload per week and how many weeks he plans to keep this up. This will involve addition and multiplication to determine total videos over a set period.
Talking Points
- "Estimating is like making a smart guess. Can you guess how many views this video will get next week?"
- "Did you know that YouTube pays creators based on how many people watch their videos? Let's calculate how much money they could make!"
- "If a video is 10 minutes long, how many times can you watch it in an hour? Let's figure that out together!"
- "Planning is important! If you want to upload 2 videos a week for 5 weeks, how many videos will you have in total?"
