Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a comprehensive understanding of Dependency Theory, the Modern World Systems perspective, and the dynamics between the Global North and South. The student will also be able to critically analyze how these theories apply to current global issues and their implications for social and economic development.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for taking notes
  • Access to a computer or device for research
  • Whiteboard or large paper for brainstorming
  • Markers or colored pens for visual aids
  • Access to online articles or academic papers on Dependency Theory and Modern World Systems (optional)

Before the lesson, it would be beneficial for the student to have a basic understanding of global economics and social structures. Familiarity with terms like "developed" and "developing" countries will also be helpful.

Activities

  • Research and Present:

The student will choose one country from the Global South and one from the Global North. They will research their economic and social structures and present their findings, focusing on how Dependency Theory can explain the differences between them.

  • Debate:

The student will participate in a mock debate on whether Dependency Theory or Modern World Systems better explains current global inequalities. This will encourage critical thinking and allow them to explore both sides of the argument.

  • Visual Mapping:

The student will create a visual map that illustrates the relationships between various countries in the Global North and South, highlighting trade routes, economic dependencies, and cultural exchanges. This will help them visualize the concepts discussed.

  • Case Study Analysis:

The student will choose a contemporary issue (like climate change, trade agreements, or migration) and analyze it through the lens of Dependency Theory and the Modern World Systems perspective. This will help them apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios.

Talking Points

  • Understanding Dependency Theory:

"Dependency Theory suggests that the economic development of countries in the Global South is hindered by their dependence on wealthier nations. How do you think this affects their growth?"

  • The Modern World Systems Perspective:

"The Modern World Systems theory posits that the world is divided into core, semi-periphery, and periphery countries. Can you identify where different countries fit into this system?"

  • Global North vs. Global South:

"The Global North typically refers to developed nations, while the Global South includes developing countries. How do these classifications shape our understanding of global issues?"

  • Real-World Applications:

"Analyzing current events through these theories can reveal underlying power dynamics. What recent news story exemplifies these concepts?"

  • Critique and Discussion:

"While these theories provide frameworks for understanding global inequalities, they also have limitations. What do you think are the strengths and weaknesses of each theory?"
