Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to creatively design and construct a large building using large building blocks, demonstrating an understanding of balance, stability, and basic architectural concepts.
Materials and Prep
- Large building blocks (e.g., foam blocks, wooden blocks, or plastic blocks)
- A flat, open space for building
- Measuring tape (optional, for measuring dimensions)
- Paper and pencil for sketching designs (optional)
Before the lesson, ensure that the building blocks are clean and in good condition. Familiarize yourself with basic building techniques to guide the student effectively.
Activities
-
Design Your Structure:
The student will sketch a design of what they want to build. Encourage them to think about the purpose of the building (e.g., a house, a skyscraper, or a castle) and the different parts it will have.
-
Building Challenge:
Set a timer and challenge the student to build their design within a specific time frame. This activity encourages time management and creativity under pressure.
-
Stability Testing:
Once the structure is built, the student will test its stability by gently pushing it or adding weight (like a small book) to see how much it can hold without collapsing. Discuss what makes a structure stable.
-
Team Building:
If possible, invite a family member to join in the building process. They can work together to create a larger structure, fostering teamwork and collaboration.
Talking Points
- "What materials do you think are best for building strong structures?"
- "Can you explain why balance is important when constructing a tall building?"
- "What do you think makes a building stable? Let's test your design!"
- "How can working with someone else improve your building project?"
- "What would you change about your design if you had to build it again?"
