Objective
By the end of this lesson, Joseph will understand basic social skills and concepts related to social sciences. He will learn how to communicate effectively, understand the importance of teamwork, and recognize different roles in a community.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and colored pencils or crayons
- Timer (can use a phone or clock)
- A list of community roles (e.g., teacher, doctor, firefighter, etc.)
- Space for activities (a table or open area)
Before the lesson, prepare a list of community roles and think about how to explain teamwork and communication in simple terms. Make sure to have enough space for activities that involve movement and interaction.
Activities
- Role-Playing Community Helpers:
Joseph will choose a community role from the list and act it out while others guess what role he is portraying. This will help him understand the importance of each role in society.
- Teamwork Challenge:
Set a timer for 5 minutes and have Joseph build a tower using only paper and colored pencils. He can brainstorm ideas and plan with you before starting. This will teach him the value of teamwork and planning.
- Communication Game:
Play a game where Joseph has to describe an object without naming it, and you guess what it is. This will help him practice clear communication skills.
Talking Points

- "Why is it important to work together as a team? How can we help each other?"
- "When we communicate, what are some good ways to make sure we are understood?"
- "Can you think of a time when you worked with someone to solve a problem? What happened?"
- "What makes a good friend? How can we be good friends to others?"
- "If you could be any community helper for a day, who would you be and why?"
- "How does being polite and listening help us in our everyday life?"
