Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to design and build a unique Lego creation while learning about basic engineering principles, creativity, and problem-solving skills.
Materials and Prep
- Assorted Lego bricks (various shapes and sizes)
- A flat building surface (like a table or large cardboard)
- A timer (optional, for timed challenges)
- Paper and pencil for sketching ideas
Before starting the lesson, make sure the student has a clean and spacious area to build their Lego creations. Familiarize them with the different types of Lego pieces they have available.
Activities
-
Design Your Dream House
The student will sketch a design for their dream house on paper and then build it using Lego bricks. Encourage them to think about the rooms they want and how they will organize the space.
-
Lego Challenge: Build in 10 Minutes
Set a timer for 10 minutes and challenge the student to build a specific object, like a car or a spaceship. This activity promotes quick thinking and creativity under pressure!
-
Storytime with Legos
Ask the student to create a scene from their favorite story or invent a new one using Lego figures and bricks. They can then narrate the story while showing their creation.
Talking Points
- "What kind of house would you like to live in? Can you draw it first?"
- "How fast can you build something cool? Let's see if you can do it in 10 minutes!"
- "What story do you want to tell with your Legos? Let’s build your characters!"
- "How can we make your Lego creation stronger? What shapes do you think are the best?"
- "What was the hardest part of your building? How did you solve it?"
- "If you could add one more thing to your creation, what would it be?"
- "How do you feel when you build with Legos? Is it fun to create?"
- "What did you learn today about building? Can you teach me something you figured out?"
