Objective

By the end of this lesson, Gabe will understand the basic functions of the renal system, including how the kidneys filter blood, produce urine, and maintain fluid balance in the body. He will also be able to identify the main components of the renal system.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencils for drawing and note-taking
  • Colored markers or crayons
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research (optional)
  • A large piece of cardboard or poster board (for a project)
  • A timer or stopwatch (for activity timing)

Before the lesson, make sure to have a comfortable workspace set up, and consider reading a brief overview of the renal system to introduce key terms and concepts.

Activities

  • Kidney Model Creation: Gabe can create a 3D model of the kidney using paper, clay, or any available materials. This will help him visualize the structure of the kidney and its parts.
  • Urine Science Experiment: Conduct a simple experiment to mimic how kidneys filter blood. Gabe can use water, food coloring, and a coffee filter to demonstrate the filtration process.
  • Renal System Poster: Gabe can design a colorful poster that includes drawings and facts about the renal system's functions, components, and importance. This will reinforce his learning through creativity.
  • Kidney Relay Race: Create a fun relay race where Gabe has to complete tasks related to the renal system, such as matching terms with definitions or assembling parts of a kidney model. This will add a physical element to the learning.
