Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the themes of home, respect, and conflict resolution as depicted in "Hedgehog's Home." They will also engage in activities that incorporate English, Math, Music, Physical Education, Science, and Social Studies, allowing for a holistic learning experience centered around the story.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and colored pencils or crayons for drawing
  • A timer for the physical activity
  • A notebook for math problems and notes
  • Access to a music player or musical instrument (if available)
  • Space for physical activity (outdoor or indoor)
  • Knowledge of basic animal behaviors and habitats
  • Understanding of simple math operations (addition, subtraction)

Activities

  • Story Discussion:

Begin by reading or watching "Hedgehog's Home." Afterward, discuss the story's main themes and characters. Ask the student how they think Hedgehog feels about his home and why the other animals might want it.

  • Animal Habitat Drawing:

Have the student draw a picture of Hedgehog's home and the forest. Encourage them to include details about the environment and other animals that live there.

  • Math with Hedgehogs:

Create simple math problems based on the story. For example, "If Hedgehog has 5 apples and gives 2 to his friends, how many does he have left?" Use visuals if needed.

  • Musical Standoff:

Compose a short song about Hedgehog's bravery using simple instruments or clapping. This can be a fun way to explore rhythm and melody while connecting to the story.

  • Obstacle Course:

Set up a mini obstacle course that represents the challenges Hedgehog faces. Use furniture or outdoor space, and time the student as they navigate through it.

  • Social Studies Discussion:

Talk about the importance of homes for different animals. Ask the student to name other animals and where they live, discussing how their homes protect them.

Talking Points

  • "Why do you think Hedgehog loves his home so much?"
  • "How do you think the other animals feel about Hedgehog's home?"
  • "Can you think of a time when you had to stand up for something you loved?"
  • "What makes a home special to you?"
  • "How do different animals build their homes? Can you name a few?"
  • "What would you do if someone tried to take your favorite toy?"
  • "What kind of music do you think Hedgehog would like?"
  • "How can we solve problems without fighting, just like Hedgehog?"
