Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a clear understanding of the presidential election process in the United States, how it relates to local city and state politics, and the importance of civic participation in democracy.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencils for note-taking and activities
  • Markers or colored pencils for creative projects
  • Access to a calendar for tracking election dates
  • Map of the United States (can be drawn or printed)
  • Basic knowledge of the three levels of government: local, state, and federal

Activities

  • Election Timeline Creation: The student will create a timeline of the presidential election process, marking important dates such as primaries, debates, and Election Day. This visual aid will help them understand the sequence of events leading to a presidential election.

  • Mock Election: The student will participate in a mock election where they will choose a candidate (real or fictional) and campaign for them. This can include creating posters and giving a short speech on why their candidate should be elected.

  • Government Levels Comparison: The student will create a chart comparing the roles of local, state, and federal government in elections. They can include examples of how these levels interact during an election cycle.

  • Interview a Voter: The student will prepare questions and conduct a mock interview with a family member or friend about their voting experiences and opinions on the importance of voting.
