Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the importance of nutrition and hydration while hiking. They will learn how to choose appropriate snacks and drinks, understand the body's hydration needs, and create a personalized hiking snack plan.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for taking notes
  • Access to a computer or device for research (optional)
  • List of common hiking snacks and their nutritional values
  • Water bottle for hydration demonstration
  • Map of a local hiking trail (or a picture of one)

Before the lesson, ensure that the student understands basic nutrition concepts, such as macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, fats) and hydration. Prepare a list of hiking snacks that can be discussed during the lesson.

Activities

  • Snack Exploration:

The student will explore various healthy snacks suitable for hiking. They will categorize snacks into energy-boosting, protein-rich, and hydration-focused options. This activity will help them understand what to pack for different hiking scenarios.

  • Hydration Science:

The student will conduct a simple experiment to understand how much water the body needs during physical activity. Using the water bottle, they will measure how much water they drink during a short exercise session and discuss the importance of staying hydrated.

  • Create a Hiking Snack Plan:

The student will create a personalized snack plan for a hypothetical hiking trip, including a list of snacks and the reasons for each choice based on nutritional value and hydration needs. They will present their plan and explain their choices.

Talking Points

  • "Nutrition is essential while hiking because it fuels your body and keeps your energy levels up."
  • "Hydration is just as important; our bodies can lose a lot of water through sweat, especially during physical activities like hiking."
  • "When choosing snacks, look for options that provide quick energy, like fruits or granola bars, and also include protein to help keep you full."
  • "Always remember to drink water before, during, and after your hike to stay properly hydrated."
  • "Planning your snacks ahead of time can make your hiking experience more enjoyable and keep you energized!"
