Objective
By the end of this lesson, Maximus will be able to identify the role of a construction worker, understand basic shapes and patterns, and explore color mixing using light table manipulatives. He will also engage in hands-on activities that will enhance his creativity and critical thinking skills.
Materials and Prep
- Book: "Let's Meet a Construction Worker" by Bridget Heos
- Light table
- Various shapes (blocks, cut-outs)
- Arithmetic cubes
- Light table manipulatives for color mixing
- Planning Playtime curriculum: "Can You Build It?"
Before the lesson, read the book to familiarize yourself with the content. Prepare the light table with shapes and manipulatives ready for exploration.
Activities
-
Reading Time:
Start by reading "Let's Meet a Construction Worker" together. Discuss what construction workers do and why they are important in our community.
-
Shape Exploration:
Use the light table to explore different shapes. Encourage Maximus to create patterns using the various shapes available. Ask him to describe the shapes and the patterns he creates.
-
Building Patterns Activity:
Using arithmetic cubes, have Maximus build patterns. For example, he can create a pattern of red, blue, red, blue. Discuss how patterns repeat and how they can be found in construction.
-
Color Mixing Fun:
Using the light table manipulatives, let Maximus experiment with color mixing. Show him how different colors combine to make new colors. Ask him to name the colors he sees and what happens when he mixes them.
Talking Points
- "What do you think a construction worker does every day?"
- "Can you find a shape that looks like a triangle? What about a square?"
- "Let's make a pattern! Can you tell me what comes next in this sequence?"
- "What colors do you see when we mix these two together? Can you name them?"
- "Why do you think patterns are important in building things?"
- "How can you use shapes to build something cool? What will you create?"
