Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify the main idea of a short story, recognize different characters, and express their thoughts about the story in a creative way.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Crayons or markers
  • A comfortable reading spot
  • A short story (can be a favorite book or a simple story created by the teacher)
  • Preparation: Familiarize yourself with the story and think of questions to ask the student.

Activities

  • Story Time:

Read a short story together. Use expressive voices for different characters to make it fun and engaging.

  • Character Drawing:

After reading, ask the student to draw their favorite character from the story. Encourage them to use lots of colors!

  • Character Interview:

Have the student pretend to be their favorite character and answer questions like, "What do you like to do?" or "What is your favorite food?"

  • Story Retelling:

Ask the student to tell you the story in their own words. This helps them think about the main idea!

Talking Points

  • "What do you think this story is about? Can you tell me the main idea?"
  • "Who is your favorite character? Why do you like them?"
  • "What do you think will happen next if the story continued?"
  • "Can you draw your favorite part of the story? Show me what you imagined!"
  • "If you could be any character in the story, who would you be? Why?"
