Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be equipped with effective interview techniques, including how to prepare for an interview, how to present oneself confidently, and how to answer common interview questions. The student will also learn how to ask insightful questions to the interviewer, creating a two-way conversation.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for taking notes
  • Timer (can use a phone or watch)
  • Access to a mirror for practice
  • List of common interview questions (can be created during the lesson)
  • Optional: A recording device (like a smartphone) for self-review

Before the lesson, it’s helpful to think about the types of jobs the student is interested in, as this will guide the interview practice and questions.

Activities

  • Role-Playing Interviews:

Engage in mock interviews where the student takes turns being the interviewer and the interviewee. This will help the student practice answering questions and thinking on their feet.

  • Creating a Personal Pitch:

The student will craft a 30-second elevator pitch that summarizes their skills, experiences, and what they can bring to a potential employer. This is a great way to practice self-presentation.

  • Common Questions Brainstorm:

Together, brainstorm a list of common interview questions and discuss effective strategies for answering them. This could include behavioral questions and situational questions.

  • Feedback Session:

After practicing, provide constructive feedback on body language, tone of voice, and content of answers. This will help the student identify areas for improvement.

Talking Points

  • "Preparation is key. Research the company and the role you’re applying for to tailor your answers."
  • "Practice makes perfect! The more you practice, the more comfortable you’ll become in an interview setting."
  • "Remember, it’s a two-way street. Asking questions shows your interest and helps you assess if the company is a good fit for you."
  • "Your body language speaks volumes. Maintain eye contact, sit up straight, and use gestures to convey confidence."
  • "Don’t forget to follow up! A thank-you note can leave a lasting impression after the interview."
