Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the concept of buoyancy by predicting and testing whether different objects sink or float in water. They will learn to make observations and discuss their findings in a fun and engaging way.
Materials and Prep
- A bucket of water
- Various small items to test (e.g., a toy, a rock, a piece of fruit, a plastic bottle, etc.)
Before the lesson, gather a variety of small items that the student can safely handle and predict whether they will sink or float. Make sure the water is at a safe level in the bucket.
Activities
-
Prediction Time: Start by showing the student each item one by one. Ask them to predict whether they think the item will sink or float. Encourage them to explain their reasoning.
-
Sink or Float Experiment: After making predictions, let the student drop each item into the bucket of water. Observe together whether it sinks or floats. Celebrate correct predictions!
-
Sorting Game: After testing all items, create two piles: one for items that sank and one for those that floated. Help the student sort and count the items in each pile.
-
Creative Drawing: Ask the student to draw their favorite item from the experiment and whether it sank or floated. Encourage them to use colors and labels!
Talking Points
- "What do you think will happen when we put this in the water?"
- "Look! It sank! Why do you think that happened?"
- "Wow, that one floated! What do you think makes it float?"
- "Can you help me sort these? Which ones sank and which ones floated?"
- "Great job! Now let’s draw what we did today. What was your favorite part?"
