Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a comprehensive understanding of the lotion-making process and will create their own personalized lotion using simple ingredients. The student will learn about the properties of different ingredients and how they contribute to the lotion's texture and effectiveness.

Materials and Prep

  • 1 cup of carrier oil (e.g., coconut oil, olive oil)
  • 1/2 cup of beeswax (or a vegan alternative)
  • 1/2 cup of water or herbal infusion
  • Essential oils for fragrance (optional)
  • A small pot for melting ingredients
  • A mixing bowl or container
  • A whisk or hand blender
  • Containers for storing the lotion (e.g., jars or bottles)

Before the lesson, ensure that all materials are gathered and the workspace is clean. Discuss safety precautions when handling hot ingredients.

Activities

  • Research & Discussion:

Start the lesson by researching the benefits of different oils and waxes used in lotion making. Discuss how each ingredient contributes to skin health and hydration. This will help the student understand why they are choosing specific ingredients for their lotion.

  • Hands-On Lotion Making:

Guide the student through the process of melting the beeswax and carrier oil together, then slowly incorporating water or herbal infusion while mixing. This hands-on activity will reinforce their understanding of emulsification and the importance of combining oil and water.

  • Personalization:

Encourage the student to add essential oils to their lotion for fragrance. Discuss the properties of different essential oils and how they can enhance the lotion's benefits. This will allow the student to create a lotion that is uniquely theirs.

  • Labeling & Presentation:

Once the lotion is made, have the student create a label for their product. They can include the name of the lotion, the ingredients used, and any special benefits. This activity will teach them about marketing and presentation.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think the role of beeswax is in our lotion?"
  • "Can you explain why we need to emulsify the oil and water?"
  • "How do you think different essential oils can change the properties of our lotion?"
  • "Why is it important to label our homemade products?"
