Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create their own homemade room spray using water and witch hazel. They will learn about the properties of these ingredients and how they can be used to create a pleasant atmosphere in their living space.

Materials and Prep

  • Water
  • Witch hazel
  • A clean spray bottle (preferably glass or plastic)
  • Measuring cup
  • Funnel (optional, but helpful)
  • Labels (optional for decoration)

Before starting the lesson, ensure that all materials are gathered and that the workspace is clean. Explain the importance of using a clean spray bottle to avoid contamination.

Activities

  • Ingredient Exploration:

Discuss the properties of water and witch hazel. What do they know about these ingredients? Why might we choose to use them in a room spray? This activity encourages the student to think critically about the materials they are using.

  • Mixing the Spray:

Guide the student in measuring out the ingredients. A common ratio is 1 part witch hazel to 3 parts water. Allow them to mix the ingredients in the spray bottle, using a funnel if necessary to avoid spills.

  • Label Creation:

Encourage the student to create a label for their homemade spray. They can decorate it with drawings or stickers, and write the name of their new creation. This adds a personal touch and encourages creativity.

  • Testing the Spray:

Once the spray is mixed, have the student test it in a small area of the room. Discuss how it smells and how it makes them feel. This will help them understand the impact of scents on our environment.

Talking Points

  • "Water is a universal solvent, which means it can dissolve many substances. In our spray, it helps to distribute the witch hazel evenly."
  • "Witch hazel is a natural astringent. It can help to refresh and purify the air, making our room feel cleaner."
  • "Using a spray bottle allows us to control how much we use and where we spray it. It's a great way to apply scents without overwhelming the space."
  • "Creating a label for our spray not only helps us remember what's inside, but it also makes it feel special and unique!"
  • "Testing the spray in different areas can help us understand how scents can change the atmosphere of a room. It's all about finding what makes us feel good!"
