Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will have practiced writing their name and letters through engaging physical activities. They will develop their fine motor skills, enhance their letter recognition, and have fun while being active!
Materials and Prep
- No specific materials are required for this lesson.
- Ensure the student has a comfortable space to move around freely.
- Be ready to encourage creativity and expression during activities.
Activities
-
Letter Hopscotch: Create a hopscotch grid using chalk or tape (if indoors). Each square will have a letter of the alphabet. The student will hop from letter to letter, calling out the letter names and practicing writing them in the air with their hands as they land on each square.
-
Name Relay: Set up a relay course where the student has to run to a designated spot, write one letter of their name on the ground (using their finger or foot), and then run back to the starting point. Repeat until the entire name is written. This combines physical activity with letter recognition.
-
Letter Dance Party: Play some upbeat music and have the student dance freely. When the music stops, call out a letter. The student must freeze in a pose that starts with that letter (e.g., "B" for "ballet pose"). After freezing, they can write the letter in the air or on the ground.
Talking Points
- "Can you tell me what sound this letter makes?"
- "How many letters are in your name? Let's count them together!"
- "What is your favorite letter? Why do you like it?"
- "When you write your name, how does it make you feel?"
- "Let's think of other words that start with the letters in your name!"
