Objective
By the end of this lesson, Saxon will understand the basic principles of civics and citizenship, the role of government and democracy, and how community engagement can influence local decisions. Saxon will also explore how these concepts can be connected to his interests in gaming.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencils for notes and drawings
- Access to online games (Minecraft, Fortnite) for gameplay examples
- Simple internet access to research local government and community engagement opportunities
- Optional: Access to a video conferencing tool for discussions with friends or family
Before the lesson, it would be helpful to have a basic understanding of what government is and how it functions in your community. You can also think about how games like Minecraft or Fortnite involve teamwork and decision-making, which are similar to civic engagement.
Activities
-
Game-Based Civic Simulation:
Saxon can create a simple simulation in Minecraft where he sets up a community with different roles (mayor, council member, citizen). He can then role-play how decisions are made, discussing the importance of each role in a democracy.
-
Community Engagement Project:
Saxon can research a local issue (like a park renovation or a community event) and create a proposal on how he would address it. He can present this proposal to family members as if they were a town council.
-
Debate Club:
Using the online gaming platform, Saxon can organize a debate with friends about a civic issue (like video game regulations). This will help him understand different perspectives and the importance of discussion in democracy.
-
Design a Community Game:
Saxon can design a game that teaches players about civic responsibilities and the voting process. He can outline rules and objectives that reflect real-life civic engagement.

- "Governments are like the rules of a game. They help keep everything fair and make sure everyone plays by the same rules."
- "Engagement in your community can be as simple as helping out at a local event or voicing your opinion on social media. How can you use your voice to make a difference?"
- "Just like in Minecraft, where you build and create, you can help build your community through participation and creativity!"
- "Remember, every vote counts! Just like in a game, where every player's move affects the outcome, your voice matters in democracy."
