Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will gain an understanding of the nursery rhyme "Baa Baa Black Sheep," including its themes, characters, and potential meanings. The student will also engage in creative activities that reinforce their comprehension and encourage imaginative thinking.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil or crayons
  • Access to your voice for singing

Before the lesson, it would be helpful to familiarize yourself with the lyrics of "Baa Baa Black Sheep" and consider its themes of sharing and community. No additional materials are required, but be ready to get creative!

Activities

  • Sing the Rhyme: Start by singing "Baa Baa Black Sheep" together. Encourage the student to join in, and perhaps even create hand motions to go along with the lyrics. This will help them memorize the rhyme and enjoy its rhythm.
  • Illustrate the Story: Have the student draw a picture of the black sheep and the characters mentioned in the rhyme. They can create a scene that depicts the sheep meeting the farmer or the bags of wool being shared. This will enhance their understanding of the story.
  • Creative Writing: Ask the student to write their own version of the rhyme, perhaps changing the characters or the items being shared. This activity encourages creativity and helps them think critically about the original text.
  • Role Play: Engage in a role-playing activity where the student can act out the story. They can pretend to be the sheep, the farmer, or even the bags of wool. This will help them understand the dynamics of the characters in the rhyme.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think the black sheep represents in the rhyme?"
  • "Why do you think the farmer asks for wool? How can sharing be important in our lives?"
  • "How does the rhyme make you feel? Can you think of a time when you shared something with someone?"
  • "What would happen if the black sheep didn’t have any wool to give? How would that change the story?"
