Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the interdependence of living things and their environments, recognize the impact of physical conditions on growth and survival, and appreciate the importance of sustainable food and fiber production. The student will also plan and create a healthy meal using locally available ingredients.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for notes and planning
  • Access to a garden or local park to observe plants and animals
  • Ingredients for a healthy meal (e.g., vegetables, fruits, grains, etc.)
  • Cooking tools (if applicable, such as a knife, cutting board, and pots)
  • Art supplies (paper, colors, etc. for drawing or creating a food web)
  • Internet access for research on sustainable practices

Activities

  1. Nature Observation: Take a walk in the garden or local park to observe the relationships between plants and animals. Look for examples of how bees pollinate flowers and how birds disperse seeds. Document findings in your notebook.

  2. Food Web Creation: Use art supplies to create a visual food web that illustrates the interdependence of various living things. Include at least five different organisms and explain their relationships.

  3. Research on Sustainability: Spend some time researching why sustainable food and fiber production is important. Take notes on at least three practices that help protect the environment.

  4. Healthy Meal Planning: Plan a healthy meal using ingredients that can be found in your local area. Consider how the meal incorporates plants and animals and their roles in the ecosystem.

  5. Cooking Activity: Prepare the healthy meal you planned. Discuss the tools and techniques you are using and how they relate to the growth and health of the ingredients.
