Objective

By the end of this art lesson, the student will be able to create their own dragon artwork, exploring their imagination and creativity while learning about different dragon characteristics and styles. The student will also gain confidence in their artistic abilities and have fun expressing their ideas through art.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper (any type will do)
  • Pencil or pen
  • Colored pencils, markers, or crayons (if available)
  • A comfortable workspace
  • Optional: Reference images of dragons (printed or on a device)

Before the lesson, ensure the workspace is tidy and free from distractions. If using reference images, gather a variety of dragon styles to inspire creativity.

Activities

  • Dragon Sketching:

Start by sketching different types of dragons. Encourage the student to think about the features they want their dragon to have, such as wings, horns, and scales. They can create their own unique dragon or draw inspiration from existing ones.

  • Dragon Story Creation:

After sketching, have the student write a short story about their dragon. What is its name? What powers does it have? Where does it live? This activity combines creativity in both art and writing.

  • Coloring and Detailing:

Once the sketch is complete, the student can use colored pencils, markers, or crayons to bring their dragon to life. Encourage them to think about colors that represent their dragon’s personality, such as fiery reds for a fierce dragon or cool blues for a calm one.

  • Dragon Parade:

At the end of the lesson, have a 'Dragon Parade' where the student can showcase their artwork and story. They can present their dragon to family members, explaining its features and story, which helps build confidence in public speaking.

Talking Points

  • "Dragons come in many shapes and sizes. What kind of dragon do you want to create?"
  • "Think about your dragon's environment. Does it live in a cave, a mountain, or maybe even in the clouds?"
  • "What colors do you think best represent your dragon's personality? How can you use these colors to express that?"
  • "Every dragon has a story. What adventures has your dragon been on? How did it get its powers?"
  • "Art is about expressing yourself. Don't be afraid to be unique and let your imagination run wild!"
