Objective

By the end of this lesson, Emily will learn how to create her own playdough using common household products. She will understand the science behind the ingredients and have fun experimenting with different colors and textures.

Materials and Prep

  • Flour (1 cup)
  • Salt (1/4 cup)
  • Water (1/2 cup)
  • Vegetable oil (1 tablespoon)
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • A mixing bowl
  • A spoon for mixing
  • A clean surface for kneading

Before the lesson, gather all materials and ensure that Emily has a clean workspace. It's also a good idea to wear an apron or old clothes, as things might get a little messy!

Activities

  • Making the Playdough:

Start by combining the flour, salt, and vegetable oil in the mixing bowl. Gradually add water while mixing until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a clean surface until smooth. This is where Emily can feel the texture change as she works with it!

  • Color Mixing Fun:

If Emily wants to add some color to her playdough, she can divide the dough into smaller portions and add a few drops of food coloring. She can then mix it in and observe how the color spreads and changes the dough.

  • Creative Playtime:

Once the playdough is ready, Emily can use it to create different shapes, figures, or even a mini sculpture. This is a great time for her to express her creativity and have fun with her new creation!

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that playdough is a type of non-Newtonian fluid? That means it can behave like a solid and a liquid depending on how you handle it!"
  • "What do you think will happen if we add too much water? Let's find out together!"
  • "Feel the texture of the dough. How does it change when we knead it? This is a fun way to learn about mixing and texture!"
  • "When we add food coloring, we’re actually changing the physical properties of the dough. Isn’t that cool?"
  • "Let’s think about how we can use our playdough. What shapes or characters can we create? This is all about using our imagination!"
  • "How does the playdough feel in your hands? Is it sticky, smooth, or something else? This is a great way to explore textures!"
  • "Remember, if your playdough is too sticky, we can always add a little more flour. It’s like cooking – we can adjust our recipe!"
  • "This playdough can last for weeks if we store it properly. What do you think is the best way to keep it fresh?"
  • "Let’s think about other things we could make with playdough. What about a playdough pizza or a mini garden?"
  • "How do you think the ingredients work together? Each one plays an important role in making the playdough just right!"
  • "What was your favorite part of making playdough today? It’s always fun to create something with our own hands!"
  • "Can you think of other recipes we could try with similar ingredients? This could be the start of a fun cooking adventure!"
