Objective
By the end of this lesson, Cullen will understand the history and significance of Thanksgiving, practice multiplication and introductory division through fun activities, and improve his reading and grammar skills through engaging stories and discussions.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and colored pencils for drawing
- Whiteboard or large paper for math problems
- Books or printed stories about Thanksgiving
- Timer for games
Before the lesson, prepare a list of multiplication facts and simple division problems to work on. Choose a fun Thanksgiving story to read together.
Activities
- Thanksgiving History Scavenger Hunt: Create a scavenger hunt around the house or yard with clues related to Thanksgiving history. Each clue will lead to the next, with facts about the first Thanksgiving.
- Multiplication Relay Race: Set up a relay race where Cullen has to solve multiplication problems at each station before moving on to the next. This combines physical activity with math practice!
- Story Time and Grammar Fun: Read a Thanksgiving story together, then create a list of nouns, verbs, and adjectives from the story. Cullen can act out some of the verbs to make it kinesthetic.
- Thanksgiving Art Project: Have Cullen create a Thanksgiving-themed poster that includes multiplication facts and a short paragraph about what Thanksgiving means to him.
