Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand how to form equal groups by sharing and counting collections of objects. They will learn to recognize the concept of fairness in sharing and practice counting through hands-on activities.
Materials and Prep
- Any collection of small objects (e.g., toys, fruit, or household items)
- A flat surface to work on
- Counting skills (the student should be familiar with counting from 1 to 10)
Activities
- Sharing the Treasure:
Gather a collection of small objects. Explain to the student that they will be sharing these treasures with you. Ask them to count how many objects they have and then help them share the objects equally between the two of you. This activity will reinforce the concept of equal groups.
- Equal Groups Game:
Using the same collection of objects, ask the student to create groups of a certain number (e.g., groups of 2 or 3). Encourage them to count how many groups they can make and how many objects are in each group. This will help them visualize equal sharing.
- Group Counting Challenge:
Challenge the student to create different equal groups using the objects. For example, if they have 12 objects, ask them to make groups of 4. Have them count the groups and the objects in each group. This will reinforce their counting and grouping skills.
Talking Points
- "What do you think it means to share equally? Can you show me?"
- "How many objects do we have? Let's count them together!"
- "If we want to share these equally, how many should each of us get?"
- "Can you make a group of 2? How many groups can we make?"
- "Wow! Look at all these equal groups we made! How does it feel to share?"
