Materials Needed:
- An open space (indoors or outdoors) safe for running
- At least 3 participants (including the student and teacher/parent)
Introduction: Freeze Tag Fun!
Today, we're going to play a super fun game you love - Freeze Tag! But we're going to add a little math twist to make our brains stronger while we run!
Activity: Freeze Tag Counting Game
Let's head to our open space. We need at least three people to play.
- Choose 'It': Decide who will be 'It' first.
- Start the Game: 'It' will chase the other players. Everyone else tries to run away without getting tagged.
- Freeze!: When 'It' tags someone, that person must freeze exactly where they are!
- Count the Frozen: Every time someone new gets frozen, let's pause the game for a second. We'll all count together: How many people are frozen right now? Let's touch each frozen person gently as we count: "One... two..."
- Adding One More (Optional): If we already have one person frozen, and 'It' tags another person, let's think: We had 1, and now we added 1 more. How many are frozen now? That's right, 2! (Demonstrate with fingers if helpful).
- Unfreezing (Optional Simplification): For this math version, we might skip unfreezing to keep the counting simple, or assign one person to *only* unfreeze, but not count them as 'frozen'. Decide based on the student's focus. The main goal is counting the *frozen* players.
- Switch Roles: Play for a few minutes, then switch who is 'It'.
Wrap-up: Counting Review
Great job playing Freeze Tag Math! Wasn't that fun? Let's think: What was the biggest number of frozen people we counted today? You did amazing counting while playing!
