Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to share stories about their own family heritage and learn about the heritage of others. They will understand the importance of family stories and how they connect us to our past.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Crayons or colored pencils
  • A comfortable space for storytelling
  • Time to listen and share stories

Before the lesson, think about some family stories you would like to share. Encourage the student to ask family members about their heritage and stories as well.

Activities

  • Story Time

Start by sharing a favorite family story. Use expressive voices and gestures to make it fun! Ask the student if they have any stories from their family to share.

  • Heritage Drawing

Have the student draw a picture that represents their family heritage. This could be a family tree, a special place, or something that represents their culture. Encourage them to explain their drawing.

  • Story Swap

Invite the student to pretend to be a storyteller. They can tell a story about their family or make up a new one. You can take turns sharing stories with each other!

  • Family Heritage Collage

Using the paper, help the student create a collage of things that represent their heritage. They can draw symbols, write words, or create images that tell a story about their family.

Talking Points

  • "Do you know why our family stories are important? They help us remember where we came from!"
  • "What is your favorite story about our family? Can you tell me more about it?"
