Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify who they are, understand how they have grown and changed, and recognize that other people grow and change too. They will create a personal timeline that illustrates their growth and learn to appreciate the changes in themselves and others.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Crayons or markers
  • Stickers (optional)
  • Space to move around for activities

Before starting the lesson, think about some key moments in your life that you can share with the student. Prepare to encourage them to think about their own experiences and changes.

Activities

  • My Growth Timeline: The student will draw a timeline on paper, marking important milestones in their life (e.g., first steps, first day of school) and how they have changed over time.
  • Story Time: Read a short story about a character who grows and changes. Discuss the character's journey and how they became different throughout the story.
  • Mirror, Mirror: Have the student look in a mirror and describe what they see. Then, ask them to think about how they have changed over the past year and what they like about themselves.
  • Growth Dance: Create a fun dance that represents growing taller, like stretching arms up high and then squatting down low. Play music and encourage the student to express how they feel while growing.
  • Friendship Changes: Discuss how friends can also grow and change. Ask the student to think of a friend and how they have both changed since they met.

Talking Points

  • "Can you tell me about a time when you learned something new?"
  • "What are some things you could do when you were a baby that you can’t do now?"
  • "How do you think you will change when you grow up?"
  • "What is something you really like about yourself?"
  • "Can you think of a friend who has changed? How have they changed?"
