Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to practice basic arithmetic skills using Lego blocks.
Materials and Prep
- Lego blocks (various colors and sizes)
- Pen and paper
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Counting Bricks:
Start by counting the number of Lego bricks you have. Write down the total number on a piece of paper.
-
Addition with Lego:
Build two towers using Lego bricks. Count the number of bricks in each tower and write down the numbers. Add the two numbers together to find the total number of bricks.
-
Subtraction with Lego:
Build a tower using Lego bricks. Count the number of bricks in the tower. Now remove some bricks from the tower and count how many are left. Write down the numbers. Subtract the second number from the first number to find out how many bricks were removed.
-
Patterns with Lego:
Create a pattern using Lego bricks (e.g., red, blue, red, blue). Repeat the pattern a few times. Ask the student to continue the pattern by adding the next brick in the sequence.
Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to learn about numbers and math using our favorite Lego blocks!"
- "We will start by counting how many Lego bricks we have. Can you help me count them?"
- "Now, let's build two towers using Lego bricks. We will count how many bricks are in each tower and then add them together. Can you tell me the total number of bricks?"
- "Next, we will remove some bricks from a tower and count how many are left. Then we will subtract the second number from the first number to find out how many bricks were removed. Can you do that?"
- "Finally, let's create a pattern using Lego bricks. We will make a sequence of colors, and you will continue the pattern by adding the next brick in the sequence. Can you do it?"
