Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to compare and contrast the descriptions of Cleopatra's meeting with Mark Antony as portrayed by Shakespeare and Plutarch. The student will analyze the literary techniques used by both authors and discuss the significance of these portrayals in understanding Cleopatra's character and her relationship with Antony.
Materials and Prep
- Notebook and pen for notes and reflections
- Printed excerpts from Shakespeare's "Antony and Cleopatra" and Plutarch's "Life of Antony" (if available, otherwise, summaries can be used)
- Access to a quiet space for reading and discussion
- Basic knowledge of Shakespeare's works and Plutarch's historical context
Activities
-
Reading and Note-Taking:
The student will read the specific passages from Shakespeare and Plutarch that describe Cleopatra's arrival on her barge to meet Antony. They will take notes on the key descriptions and any emotions or themes that stand out to them.
-
Character Analysis:
The student will create a character map for Cleopatra, noting her traits as described by both authors. They will highlight differences in how she is portrayed and what this says about her character.
-
Creative Comparison:
The student will write a short creative piece (a poem or a monologue) from Cleopatra's perspective during the meeting, incorporating elements from both authors' descriptions to showcase her feelings and intentions.
-
Discussion and Reflection:
The student will engage in a discussion about the significance of the meeting. They will reflect on how each author's portrayal affects the reader's understanding of love, power, and identity in the context of Cleopatra and Antony's relationship.
Talking Points
- "What do you think Cleopatra's intentions were when she first met Antony? How do the different portrayals help us understand her?"
- "Shakespeare often uses poetic language. How does this change the way we perceive Cleopatra compared to Plutarch's more straightforward historical account?"
- "Consider the imagery used by both authors. What images stand out to you, and what do they suggest about Cleopatra's character?"
- "Why do you think both authors chose to highlight the barge and its decorations? What might this symbolize in their stories?"
- "How does the theme of love versus power come through in the meeting? Can you find evidence in both texts that supports your thoughts?"
