Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create a short story using their imagination, practice writing simple sentences, and learn how to express their thoughts clearly through writing.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil or crayon
- Imagination!
Before the lesson, think about a few fun characters or animals the student might like to write about. This will help spark their creativity!
Activities
-
Story Starter
Begin the lesson by giving the student a fun story starter, like "Once upon a time, there was a little dragon who wanted to fly to the moon." Ask them to continue the story by adding their own ideas.
-
Draw Your Story
After they have created a story, have the student draw a picture of their favorite part. This will help them visualize their story and make it even more fun!
-
Sentence Building
Encourage the student to write down 3 sentences about their story. Remind them to use capital letters at the start of each sentence and a period at the end.
-
Story Sharing
Let the student share their story with you. Ask them to read it out loud and discuss what they liked most about it. This will build their confidence in sharing their writing.
Talking Points
- "What do you think happens next in our story?"
- "Can you tell me about your favorite character? Why do you like them?"
- "Let's think of a fun place for your story. Where would you like it to happen?"
- "How do you feel when you write? Writing is like magic, isn't it?"
- "What do you want your readers to feel when they read your story?"
- "Every story is special because it's yours! What makes your story different?"
