Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand basic concepts of measurement and mixing while having fun creating "potions" using everyday household items. The student will also enhance their fine motor skills and creativity through hands-on activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Water
  • Food coloring (if available)
  • Salt
  • Sugar
  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Small cups or containers (for mixing)
  • A spoon or stick (for stirring)

Before the lesson, gather all materials in one place. Make sure to explain to the student that we will be making fun potions that bubble and change colors!

Activities

  • Color Mixing Potions:

Start by filling a small cup with water and adding a few drops of food coloring. Let the student stir and watch how the color spreads. Then, encourage them to mix different colors to see what new color they can create!

  • Bubbling Potion:

In another cup, add a spoonful of baking soda and then slowly pour in some vinegar. Watch as it bubbles and fizzes! Explain that this is a chemical reaction, and it’s like magic!

  • Magic Crystals:

Mix water with salt or sugar in a cup until it dissolves. Let the student know that if we leave it out, crystals will form, just like magic! You can check on it later to see what happens.

Talking Points

  • "Look at how our colors mix! What happens when we add blue and yellow together?"
  • "Wow! Look at the bubbles! Can you hear them popping? That's a special reaction!"
  • "If we wait, we can see our magic crystals grow! What do you think they will look like?"
