Magical Mathematics: Wizarding World Word Problems for Arithmetic Practice (Gringotts, Potions & House Points)

Engage students with magical mathematics activities themed around the wizarding world! Solve word problems involving Gringotts currency conversion (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division), potion scaling (ratios, percentages), and tracking Hogwarts house points. Perfect for practicing arithmetic skills in a fun, Harry Potter-inspired context.

Welcome Young Witch or Wizard to Magical Mathematics!

Today, we're not just crunching numbers; we're managing Gringotts vaults, brewing powerful potions, and maybe even calculating Quidditch stats! Get ready to use your arithmetic skills like magical spells.

Part 1: Gringotts Currency Exchange (Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division)

Managing wizarding money requires careful calculation. Remember the conversion rates: 1 Galleon = 17 Sickles, and 1 Sickle = 29 Knuts.

  • Activity 1: Diagon Alley Shopping Spree: Imagine you have 50 Galleons. Your Hogwarts list includes: a Standard Book of Spells, Grade 7 (9 Galleons), Dragon-hide gloves (12 Galleons, 5 Sickles), and a new telescope (15 Galleons, 10 Sickles). How much did you spend in total (express in G, S, K)? How much do you have left? (Focus: Addition/Subtraction with conversion)
  • Activity 2: Currency Conversion Challenge: Convert the following amounts: a) 7 Galleons into Sickles and Knuts. b) 850 Sickles into Galleons and Sickles. c) 1500 Knuts into Sickles and Knuts, and then into Galleons, Sickles, and Knuts. (Focus: Multiplication/Division)

Part 2: Potions Class Calculations (Multiplication, Division, Fractions/Percentages)

Professor Snape demands precision! You need to adjust potion recipes.

  • Activity 3: Scaling Draughts: A standard Sleeping Draught recipe requires 12 lacewing flies for 4 students. How many flies are needed for a class of 20 students? If you accidentally brewed a batch 150% larger than needed for 4 students, how many lacewing flies did you use? (Focus: Multiplication, Division, Percentages)
  • Activity 4: Polyjuice Potion Problems: It takes one month (approx. 30 days) to brew Polyjuice Potion. If you are 40% finished, how many days have you been brewing? How many days are left?(Focus: Percentages)

Part 3: House Point Hullabaloo (Addition, Subtraction, Percentages)

House points are constantly changing!

  • Activity 5: Tallying Points: At the start of the week, Gryffindor had 312 points, Hufflepuff had 280, Ravenclaw had 350, and Slytherin had 295. During the week, Gryffindor earned 50 points but lost 15. Hufflepuff earned 35 points. Ravenclaw lost 20 points. Slytherin earned 60 points but lost 30. Calculate the points for each house at the end of the week. What is the percentage increase or decrease for Gryffindor?(Focus: Addition, Subtraction, Percentages)

Assessment & Practice:

Complete the 'Magical Mathematics Challenge' worksheet containing a mix of word problems based on today's activities. Explain your steps for one Gringotts problem and one Potions problem.

Wrap-up:

Great work navigating the arithmetic of the Wizarding World! You've shown that math skills are essential, whether you're buying school supplies, brewing potions, or tracking house points. These same skills – addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentages – are just as important in the Muggle world!
