Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the history and significance of Christmas wreaths, learn how to create their own wreath using natural and recycled materials, and express their creativity through design and decoration.

Materials and Prep

  • Natural materials (e.g., twigs, leaves, pinecones, berries)
  • Recycled materials (e.g., old fabric, cardboard, paper)
  • String or twine for binding
  • Scissors
  • Glue (if available)
  • Decorative items (optional, like ribbons or ornaments)

Before the lesson, gather materials from around the house or outdoors. Encourage the student to think creatively about how to use what they have. A brief overview of the history of Christmas wreaths will also be helpful.

Activities

  • Research the History of Wreaths:

The student can start by exploring the origins of Christmas wreaths. Discuss how they have been used throughout history and their significance in different cultures.

  • Nature Walk:

Take a walk outside to collect natural materials for the wreath. This activity will not only provide materials but also allow for a fun outdoor experience.

  • Design Your Wreath:

Using the collected materials, the student can sketch a design for their wreath. This encourages planning and creativity before they start assembling the wreath.

  • Wreath Assembly:

Guide the student through the process of assembling the wreath using the materials they have gathered. They can experiment with different textures and colors as they create.

  • Decorate Your Wreath:

Once the base is complete, the student can add decorative items to personalize their wreath. This is a chance to express their style and creativity.

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that wreaths have been used for thousands of years? They symbolize eternity because they have no beginning or end!"
  • "Wreaths were originally made from natural materials, like leaves and branches. What kind of materials do you think we can find outside?"
  • "Creating a wreath can be a fun way to express your creativity! What colors and textures do you want to use?"
  • "As we design our wreath, think about what it represents to you. Is it about family, celebration, or something else?"
  • "Don’t forget to have fun with this! There are no wrong ways to decorate your wreath. It's all about what you love!"
