Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a deeper understanding of the ancient calendar used in the Bible, including key dates, festivals, and how the calendar influenced biblical events and practices.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil and paper for note-taking and drawing.
  • Access to the Bible (any version) for reference.
  • A timeline or large sheet of paper to create a visual representation of the ancient calendar.
  • Basic knowledge of the months in the Jewish calendar and their significance.

Activities

  • Calendar Creation: The student will create a visual representation of the ancient Jewish calendar. They will research the months, their meanings, and the festivals associated with each month, then illustrate this on a large sheet of paper.

  • Biblical Festival Role-Play: The student will choose a biblical festival (e.g., Passover, Tabernacles) and prepare a short role-play or presentation about its significance, what activities took place, and how it was celebrated.

  • Scripture Search: The student will search for specific verses in the Bible that mention dates or festivals, noting how these events are connected to the calendar. They will summarize their findings in a short paragraph.

  • Discussion and Reflection: The student will engage in a discussion about how the ancient calendar might influence modern practices or beliefs. They will reflect on what they learned and how it applies to their understanding of the Bible today.

Talking Points

  • "The ancient calendar used in the Bible is primarily lunar, meaning it is based on the phases of the moon. This affects how months and festivals are determined."
  • "Key festivals like Passover and Pentecost were crucial for the Jewish people, both for their agricultural cycles and their spiritual significance."
  • "The Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, marks a time of reflection and repentance, which is an important aspect of the calendar."
  • "Understanding the ancient calendar can help us see how biblical events are interconnected, such as the timing of Jesus' crucifixion during Passover."
  • "The calendar not only served as a way to track time but also helped to cultivate community and shared identity among the Israelites."
