Objective

By the end of this lesson, Kamie will be able to analyze and discuss the impact of social media on modern communication and society. She will also write a reflective piece expressing her thoughts on the role of social media in her life and the lives of her peers.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook or journal for writing
  • Pens or pencils
  • Access to a computer or smartphone (optional for research)
  • Whiteboard or paper for brainstorming

Before the lesson, it’s important to think about the different ways social media affects daily life, both positively and negatively. Kamie should consider her own experiences with social media and how it influences her relationships and communication skills.

Activities

  • Brainstorming Session:

Start with a brainstorming session where Kamie lists all the social media platforms she uses and how often she uses them. Then, discuss her thoughts on how these platforms influence her communication with friends and family.

  • Group Discussion:

Have a discussion about the pros and cons of social media. Kamie can write down her ideas and then share them with you. This will help her articulate her thoughts and see different perspectives.

  • Reflective Writing:

Ask Kamie to write a reflective piece (about 1-2 pages) discussing her views on social media. She should include how it affects her daily life, communication skills, and relationships. Encourage her to give specific examples.

  • Creative Presentation:

Finally, Kamie can create a short presentation (using a poster or digital format) summarizing her findings and opinions on social media. This can include quotes, images, or statistics that resonate with her reflections.

Talking Points

  • “Why do you think social media is so popular among teenagers today?”
  • “Can you think of a time when social media helped you connect with someone?”
  • “What are some negative effects of social media that you’ve noticed in your life or in your friends’ lives?”
  • “How do you feel when you see a post that makes you feel excluded or left out?”
  • “In your opinion, does social media improve or hinder communication skills? Why?”
  • “What are some ways we can use social media more responsibly?”
  • “How do you think social media will change in the next few years?”
