Objective

By the end of this lesson, Kamie will be able to analyze and discuss various forms of media in relation to current societal issues in the USA. She will create a project that reflects her understanding of how literature and media influence public opinion and personal perspectives.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook or journal for notes and reflections
  • Pens or pencils for writing
  • Access to current news articles or social media platforms for research
  • Art supplies (markers, colored pencils, paper) for project creation

Before the lesson, Kamie should familiarize herself with at least two current societal issues in the USA, such as climate change, social justice movements, or mental health awareness. This will help her engage more deeply in the activities.

Activities

  • Media Exploration: Kamie will choose a current news article or social media post related to a societal issue. She will summarize the content and reflect on the author's perspective and intent.
  • In this activity, Kamie will practice critical reading skills by identifying the main ideas and biases in the media she chooses. This will help her understand how media shapes public perception.

  • Creative Expression: After researching, Kamie will create a visual project (like a poster or infographic) that represents her findings and opinions on the chosen issue.
  • This creative activity allows Kamie to express her understanding in a visual format, making the information more accessible and engaging for her audience.

  • Group Discussion: If possible, Kamie will share her project with family or friends and facilitate a discussion about the societal issue, encouraging others to express their views.
  • This will enhance Kamie's communication skills and help her practice articulating her thoughts clearly and confidently.

Talking Points

  • "How does the media influence our understanding of societal issues?"
  • "What are some biases you noticed in the articles or posts you read?"
  • "Why do you think it's important to discuss current issues with others?"
  • "How can creative projects help convey serious topics?"
  • "What role do you think young people should play in addressing these issues?"
