Objective
By the end of this lesson, the toddler will be able to write a short sentence about turtles using basic vocabulary and sentence structure.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Crayons or markers
- Turtle picture or toy (optional)
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Introduction: Show the toddler a picture of a turtle or a turtle toy if available. Discuss what they know about turtles and encourage them to share their thoughts and observations.
- Writing Practice: Provide the toddler with a sheet of paper and crayons or markers. Ask them to draw a picture of a turtle. Assist them in labeling the different parts of the turtle, such as the head, shell, and legs. Encourage them to write the corresponding words or letters next to each label.
- Sentence Building: Together, create a simple sentence about turtles using the words the toddler has written. For example, "Turtles have a hard shell." Write the sentence on the paper and read it aloud to the toddler. Have them trace over the words with their finger to reinforce word recognition.
- Independent Writing: Ask the toddler to come up with their own sentence about turtles using the words they have learned. Encourage them to sound out the words and write them to the best of their ability. Offer guidance and support as needed.
- Sharing and Reflection: Have the toddler share their sentence with you or a family member. Praise their effort and celebrate their accomplishment. Ask them questions about what they enjoyed most about turtles and writing.
