Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have created their own nativity set using craft materials and will understand the true meaning of Christmas, focusing on kindness, love, and family.

Materials and Prep

  • Colored paper (brown, yellow, blue, and white)
  • Scissors
  • Glue or tape
  • Markers or crayons
  • Small boxes or cardboard (for the stable)
  • Craft sticks or straws (for structural support)
  • Optional: Glitter or stickers for decoration

Before the lesson, gather all materials in a comfortable workspace. Familiarize yourself with the nativity story to help explain it to the student.

Activities

  • Story Time:

Begin the lesson by reading a simple nativity story. Use a children's book or tell the story in your own words, focusing on the birth of Jesus and the love shared among everyone present.

  • Creating Characters:

Let the student create figures for the nativity set using colored paper. They can cut out shapes for Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, the animals, and the wise men. Encourage creativity with colors and designs!

  • Building the Stable:

Using small boxes or cardboard, help the student build a stable where the nativity figures will be placed. They can decorate it with markers, stickers, or glitter to make it special.

  • Setting Up the Scene:

Once the characters and stable are ready, guide the student in arranging them in a way that tells the nativity story. Discuss where each figure goes and why.

  • Reflection Time:

Have a discussion about what Christmas means. Ask the student questions about kindness, family, and giving, and encourage them to share their thoughts.

Talking Points

  • "Do you know why we celebrate Christmas? It's a special time to remember the birth of Jesus!"
  • "Mary and Joseph traveled a long way to find a place for baby Jesus to be born. Isn't that sweet?"
  • "The stable is where Jesus was born, and it was a cozy place with animals. Can you imagine that?"
  • "The wise men brought gifts to baby Jesus. What kind of gifts do you like to give to your friends?"
  • "Christmas is about love, kindness, and being with family. What do you love most about Christmas?"
