Materials and Prep

  • Binoculars (if available)
  • Pen and paper
  • Printed bird identification guide (optional)
  • Access to the internet (for research)

Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a basic understanding of bird anatomy and characteristics, as well as some knowledge about Booderee National Park.

Activities

  1. Introduction to Booderee National Park

Start by discussing Booderee National Park with the student. Show pictures or videos of the park and explain its location, unique features, and the importance of preserving its natural habitat.

  2. Bird Watching Expedition

Take the student on a bird watching expedition in Booderee National Park. Encourage them to observe and listen carefully to the sounds and movements of different bird species.

If available, use binoculars to get a closer look at the birds. Note down any interesting observations or sketches of the birds they see.

  3. Research and Identification

After the bird watching expedition, guide the student to research the bird species they encountered. Use books or the internet to help them identify the birds and learn more about their characteristics, habitat, and behavior.

If a printed bird identification guide is available, encourage the student to use it as a reference.

  4. Creating a Bird Journal

Ask the student to create a bird journal using their notes, sketches, and any additional information they gathered during the bird watching expedition and research. They can include details like the bird's name, appearance, habitat, and interesting facts.
