Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to successfully make and decorate their own fairy cakes. They will learn about measuring ingredients, mixing, baking, and decorating, as well as understanding the importance of following a recipe.

Materials and Prep

  • All-purpose flour
  • Granulated sugar
  • Butter (softened)
  • Eggs
  • Milk
  • Baking powder
  • Vanilla extract
  • Mini cupcake liners
  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk or spoon for mixing
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Oven
  • Cooling rack
  • Decorations (sprinkles, icing, fruits, etc.)

Before starting, make sure to preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and have all ingredients at room temperature. Ensure that the workspace is clean and organized for a smooth baking experience.

Activities

  • Measuring Ingredients:

Start by measuring out all the ingredients needed for the fairy cakes. This will help the student understand the importance of precision in baking.

  • Mixing the Batter:

Guide the student in mixing the measured ingredients together to create the batter. Discuss the texture and consistency they should be looking for.

  • Filling the Cupcake Liners:

Show the student how to properly fill the mini cupcake liners with batter, explaining the importance of not overfilling them.

  • Baking and Cooling:

Once the cakes are in the oven, explain how the heat transforms the batter into cakes. After baking, they will need to cool on a rack before decorating.

  • Decorating the Fairy Cakes:

Let the student unleash their creativity by decorating the cooled fairy cakes with icing, sprinkles, and other fun toppings.

Talking Points

  • "Baking is like a science experiment; we need to measure ingredients accurately to get the right results!"
  • "When mixing, we want to combine the ingredients until just blended. Overmixing can make our cakes tough!"
  • "Why do you think we fill the cupcake liners only halfway? It’s to allow room for the cakes to rise!"
  • "What happens inside the oven? The heat causes the batter to rise and solidify into delicious cakes!"
  • "Decorating is where we can really express ourselves! What toppings do you think would make your fairy cakes magical?"
