Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have learned the basic principles of baking, including measuring ingredients, mixing techniques, and baking times. The student will successfully bake a simple recipe, enhancing their understanding of the science behind baking while having fun in the kitchen.

Materials and Prep

  • All-purpose flour
  • Sugar
  • Baking powder
  • Salt
  • Butter
  • Eggs
  • Milk
  • Vanilla extract
  • Baking pan
  • Mixing bowls
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Whisk or spoon for mixing
  • Oven
  • Oven mitts

Before the lesson, ensure that all ingredients are fresh and that the oven is clean and functioning. Preheat the oven to the required temperature as indicated in the recipe.

Activities

  • Ingredient Exploration:

Begin the lesson by exploring the various ingredients used in baking. Discuss their roles, such as how flour provides structure and sugar adds sweetness. Let the student smell and touch the ingredients to engage their senses.

  • Measuring Challenge:

Have the student practice measuring ingredients accurately. You can create a fun game where they have to measure out specific amounts of flour, sugar, and other ingredients without spilling, encouraging precision and care.

  • Mixing Techniques:

Teach the student different mixing techniques, such as creaming butter and sugar or folding in flour. Let them practice these techniques with guidance, emphasizing the importance of each method in achieving the desired texture.

  • Baking Time:

Once the batter is prepared, guide the student in pouring it into the baking pan and placing it in the oven. Discuss the importance of baking times and how they can affect the final product. Set a timer and wait together!

  • Taste Test:

After the baking is complete, allow the student to taste their creation! Discuss what they liked about the process and what they might do differently next time. This reflection will help solidify their learning.

Talking Points

  • "Baking is both an art and a science. The right ingredients in the right proportions can create something delicious!"
  • "Measuring correctly is crucial in baking; even a little too much or too little can change the outcome."
  • "Different mixing techniques affect the texture of your baked goods. For example, creaming butter and sugar creates air pockets for a light cake!"
  • "Baking times are important; if we don't bake long enough, our treats can be gooey, but if we bake too long, they can become dry."
  • "Reflecting on what you enjoyed and what you learned today helps you become a better baker for next time!"
