Objective
By the end of this lesson, Abigail will be able to use her Barbie dolls and accessories to understand basic math concepts such as addition, subtraction, and measurement while engaging in fun and creative play.
Materials and Prep
- Barbie dolls
- Barbie accessories (clothes, cars, houses, etc.)
- Paper and pencil for notes
- Measuring tape or ruler (if available)
Before the lesson, ensure that all Barbie dolls and accessories are clean and organized. Prepare a space where Abigail can play and work comfortably with her dolls.
Activities
-
Barbie Shopping Spree
Abigail will set up a mini store using her Barbie accessories. She will create price tags for each item and practice addition and subtraction by "buying" and "selling" items to her dolls. For example, if a dress costs 5 dollars and she buys 2, how much does she spend?
-
Barbie Fashion Show
Abigail will choose outfits for her dolls and measure them using the measuring tape or ruler. She can compare the lengths of different outfits and add them together to find the total length of fabric used for the fashion show.
-
Barbie's Dream House Math
Using her dolls and accessories, Abigail will create a layout of Barbie's dream house. She will measure and calculate the area of each room, helping her understand the concept of measurement and space.
Talking Points
- "When you buy something, you have to add the cost to see how much you spend. Can you tell me how much money you have left after buying a dress?"
- "Measuring helps us understand sizes! How long is Barbie's dress? Can you measure it with the tape?"
- "If we want to make a big house for Barbie, we need to think about how much space we have. How many rooms can we fit?"
- "Let's pretend we are shop owners! What happens when we sell more than one item? How do we add those prices together?"
- "Playing with dolls can be a fun way to practice math! What other math problems can we create with Barbie?"
